Tips for Making the Felt Christmas Ornaments

For all of the ornaments above, we have a free printable pattern.

So if you plan on making several of them, just print out all the patterns you want for each of the felt ornaments.

Check your chosen tutorial for its exact supplies. For most sewn ornaments, gather colored felt, a needle and matching thread, sharp scissors, a pencil or fabric marker, and ribbon or twine for hanging. Stuffed designs also need a little filling; no-sew projects may use glue and a cardstock base.

Make sure to use sharp scissors, as you’ll cut neater lines on the felt.

Cut the paper pattern pieces first and trace them onto your felt. Add embroidery and small details to the front before joining the layers. Keep stitches small and evenly spaced, and use only a little stuffing so the seams don’t strain.

For sewn ornaments, secure both ends of the hanging loop between the felt layers before closing the top. If you’re gluing a loop onto a finished decoration, let the glue set fully before testing it. The nativity ornament and no-sew gnome above are good choices when you want to skip stitching.
