DIY Felt Nativity Ornament (With Free Printable Pattern)
This felt nativity ornament is a fun DIY felt ornament. Grab the free printable pattern and make your own.
This DIY felt nativity ornament is a no-sew ornament. Although you could stitch it together if you’d like.
Since the pieces are kind of tiny, we used a hot glue gun for ours to make it easy.
But fabric glue would work really well too.
We have lots of cute DIY Christmas ornaments and fun Christmas crafts.
And this one would be great for a Christmas sunday school craft for older kids.
Materials
To make this nativity ornament, you’ll need the following materials.
Felt fabrics: We used a large variety of colors for the ornament. Whie and brown for the Manger and house and accent pieces, 2 greens for Joseph, 2 Pinks for Mary, and blue for baby Jesus. We also used a skin tone color. And yellow for the star.
Glue: Fabric glue or a hot glue gun works best for felt.
Ribbon: To attach to the back to hang the ornament.
And a few basic supplies like:
- Pencil
- Scissors (Very sharp ones for clean cutting lines)
Instructions
Grab your different colored felts. Trace the pattern and cut them out. For the house we used white and brown. The printable pattern includes all the house pieces, including the roof and floor, pieces for the Joseph figure, pieces for the Mary figure and a pattern for baby Jesus, the star and the manger.
Step 1: Cut out the Pattern Pieces
Cut out all the pattern pieces from the felt.
Step 2: Make the House Structure
First, put the house together by attaching the roof and floor pieces to the house pattern. The roof on top, and the floor piece on the bottom.
Step 3: Make Baby Jesus
Next, attach the small head piece (baby jesus’s head) to the small oval shape (his body.)
Then attach the scarf to Jospehs head, and Mary’s hair to the top of her head.
Step 4: Start Assembling Mary & Joseph
Next, attach the head scarf ring to the top of Josephs head, and attach Mary’s scarf to her head.
Step 5: Finish the Figures
Then attach both of their heads to their body patterns, like shown above.
Step 6: Attach them to the House
Attach Joseph to one side of the house and Mary to the opposite side of the house.
Step 7: Add Baby Jesus and the Star
Then attach baby Jesus to the to center of the manger in between Mary and Joseph. And then glue the manger underneath him.
Next, attach the star to the top of the roof, in the center.
Step 8: Attach a Ribbon
Finally, take a small strip of ribbon and form a loop with it. Attach it to the back of the house, toward the top to finish the ornament.
And that’s it! You now have and adorable little nativity ornament made from felt!
If you want to make the ornament a little stiffer, you could cut out some thin cardboard to glue to the back of the ornament.
This will help it stand up straight on the tree, but isn’t always necessary.
