Making one is easier than you might think – all you need is some felt, scissors, and a little bit of creativity.
Oh, and our free patterns are super helpful as well.
For this project, we’ve created a free printable pattern for an angel ornament.
The pattern can be printed out on regular paper or cardstock, then cut out and used as a template for cutting the felt.
We’ve also provided instructions for how to make the ornament’s halo and wings.
Everything is hand embroidered and these make beautiful angel ornaments and a thoughtful gift.
So grab your supplies and get started on this fun Christmas craft for kids and adults.
Materials
To make these felt angel Christmas ornaments, you’ll need a few materials and basic craft supplies.
Colorful felt fabric pieces: You’ll need one color for the skin of your angel, so grab a color that’s close to the skin color you’ll want your angel to be. You’ll also need a color for the dress and we used white for the wings.
Ribbon: You’ll need a piece of ribbon to attach to the angel and turn it into an ornament.
Thread: We used a few different colors of thread to match the felt fabric colors, and black for the facial details.
You’ll also need some basic supplies like:
- Needle
- Pencil
- Scissors (Sharp ones work best on felt!)
Instructions
To get started making these felt angel ornaments start by choosing your colored felt fabrics.
Our angel pattern includes a template for a base piece, the angel’s dress, sleeves, hands, head, hair, halo and wings.
So choose a color for the base piece. A color for the skin tone of your angel, a color for the hair, a color for the halo, and for the wings.
Step 1:
Cut out all of the pattern pieces, and trace them out onto the felt. Cut out all of your felt pattern pieces.
Step 2:
With a sharp pen or pencil, draw a face onto your angels head.
We made closed eyes with lashes, a little nose and a tiny smile.
Use some black thread to stitch along the drawn face to embroider it.
Then attach the hands to the the center of the dress piece, like shown in the photo above. Use a thread the same color as the skin tone for this step.
Step 3:
Next, cut a slit along the yellow line on the hair pattern. Then slide the top of the angel’s head under slit so attach her hair.
Step 4:
Now sandwitch the very top of the dress piece between the head and the hair, like shown above.
Step 5:
Next, stitch around the border of the head using small stitches, making sure to join the head, hair and dress all together.
Then attach the halo the angel’s head and stitch it on.
Step 6:
Next, place the sleeves onto either side of the dress, where the hands are.
Then place the wing pieces onto each side of the base layer, making sure they overlap a little (in order to stitch them all together.)
Step 7:
Now you can place the front pattern of the angel ontop of the base piece.
Start stitch around the sides attaching everything together.
Step 8:
Once you are done sewing it all on the sides tie your thread off into a know and cut off any excess string.
Now, take your ribbon and form a loop with it. This will be your ornament hanger.
Step 9:
Stitch the loop to the back of the engel’s head to complete your angel ornament!
Now they’re ready to hang up on the Christmas tree! Don’t they look just angelic!
