To make your felt koala stuffy you’ll only need a few supplies.
Felt fabrics: We used gray, black and white pieces of felt
Black & white thread: You can use any coordinating color, but I choose black and white for our koala bear
Cotton or scrap pieces of felt: To stuff your koala bear to make him nice and plush. We just used scrap pieces of felt cut from the project
You’ll also need some basic supplies like
- Pencil or fabric marker
- Scissors
- Needle
How to Make a Felt Koala
To make your koala bear, grab our free felt koala pattern template available at the end of the tutorial.
Print and cut out all the pieces of the template.
Then select your felt fabrics and trace out all the patterns on the felt.
Cut out each of the pieces using a pair of sharp scissors.
Next, place the koala’s hand pieces onto the pain body. Stitch them to the body pieces all around the open sides.
Then attach the inner ear pieces to the ears of the main body pattern with a single cross stitch.
Next, stitch the inner belly pieces onto the center of the main belly pattern.
Add the koala’s nose and eyes onto the round head piece.
Create two eyes by cutting out small black circles from the felt and attaching those to the head to finish your koalas face.
You can add a sparkle to the eye by adding small white stitches to the upper corner of each eye.
Now, you can use your scrap pieces of felt or a cotton ball to stuff the koala.
I like to use the felt scraps and cut them into smaller pieces to stuff our little guy.
Once you have your stuffing ready, stuff both hands of the koala through the open ends.
Once the hands are stuffed well, place the belly piece onto the center of the koala’s body piece.
Stitch around the open sides, stitching the parts overlapping the hands and leaving the top part open.
Once the belly piece is firmly attached to the rest of the koala, stuff it through the open top.
Finally, place the face piece over the head area of the koala. Attach it by stitching around the open sides.
Stitch the sides overlapping the top side of the belly.
Before stitching the overlapped side, make sure to stuff the head through that end.
Stitch to close the open area of the face and lock in the stuffing. Tie a good knot or two and trim off any extra thread.
And that’s it! You’re cute felt koala bear is all finished!
You can add a little detail to the cheeks if you like.
We just used a pink marker to brighten them up a little.
And here is what the little guy would look like as a Felt Koala Christmas ornament.
Cute right? (Yes, it’s a mock-up. But I had already given him away as a gift and didn’t get a picture of him on the tree!)
He makes for a great DIY Christmas ornament.
