Free Printable Lion Crown Template for Kids
This free printable lion crown template turns a sheet of paper into a wearable lion headband for kids. Choose the full-color version for a quick craft, or print the black-and-white crown and let the kids color it themselves. Both versions are included in the printable you can request below.
It’s a simple lion craft for kids to pair with an animal story, a preschool lesson, or an afternoon of pretend play. Materials

- Scissors: An adult can help younger children cut around the mane and leaves.
- Glue or tape: For joining the front and back of the headband.
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils: For decorating the black-and-white version.
The Lion Crowns
The full-color lion crown has a yellow face, an orange mane, and green leaves. Use this version when you want to skip coloring and get straight to cutting and assembling.
The black-and-white lion crown has the same design, ready for kids to color. They can use realistic lion colors or give their lion a rainbow mane. For a separate coloring activity, try our free lion coloring pages.
Each crown has two pieces: the decorative front with the lion’s face and leaves, and a separate strip labeled “Lion.” That word strip goes around the back of the head to complete the band.
How to Make a Lion Paper Crown
- Print your chosen version. Check the print preview to make sure the entire design fits on the page. If an edge is clipped, use your printer’s “fit to page” setting. Print a test copy before making a classroom set.
- Color before cutting. Decorate the black-and-white template while it is still on the full sheet. It is easier for little hands to hold steady this way.
- Cut out both pieces. Follow the dotted lines around the lion front and the separate back strip. Keep the leaves attached to the front piece.
- Join one end. Overlap one end of the “Lion” strip with one side of the front piece and secure it with tape or glue. Keep the printed sides facing outward.
- Measure the fit. Wrap the band gently around the child’s head with the lion face at the front. Adjust the overlap so the crown stays in place without feeling tight, then mark where the loose ends should join.
- Finish the headband. Remove the crown before taping or gluing the remaining ends together. Let any glue dry before wearing it. If the band needs extra length, add a short strip of matching paper at the back.
Tips for Making the Crowns
Make it sturdy: Cardstock holds the lion’s face upright better than thin paper. Reinforce the joins with tape if the crown will be worn for lots of pretend play.
Keep decorations light: Crayons, colored pencils, and a few stickers add personality without weighing down the paper. Too much wet glue can make it curl.
Prepare for a group: Write each child’s name inside their back strip before assembling. Pre-cut the crowns for children who are still learning to use scissors, and help each child size their own band.
Preschool and Classroom Ideas
L is for lion: Point to the word on the back strip and find the letter L together. Kids can practice saying the beginning sound, then trace or copy “lion” on a separate sheet.
