Materials

Printable Halloween chain strips: Get the free PDF using the signup form below. The strips already have countdown numbers.

Printer and paper: Regular printer paper bends easily into loops. Lightweight cardstock also works, but stiff card can be harder to keep glued together.

Glue or tape: Use a glue stick, a small amount of school glue, or clear tape to secure the overlapping ends.

Scissors: Cut out the strips along their edges. An adult can use a paper cutter to prepare a set for younger children.

The Printable

The free PDF includes colorful paper chain strips labeled with the number of days until Halloween. The preview shows designs such as ghosts, pumpkins, a mummy, and a black cat.

Instructions

1. Download and print: Request the PDF using the form below, then save it from your email. Select the paper size loaded in your printer and check the print preview. Use “Fit to printable area” if the edges would otherwise be cut off, and keep the same scale for every page.
2. Cut out the strips: Cut along the edges of each colored strip. Set aside any numbers you do not need for your starting date.
3. Put the numbers in order: Use the number of days remaining until October 31. On October 1, that is 30 days; on October 15, it is 16 days. Arrange the needed strips from the highest number down to 1.
4. Make the loops: Overlap the ends of the first strip with the design facing outward and secure with glue or tape. Thread the next strip through that loop before joining its ends. Continue in number order, keeping the highest number at the end you will remove first.
5. Count down each day: Read the number together, then remove that link at the end of the day. For example, remove 30 on the evening of October 1 and 1 on the evening of October 30. On Halloween morning, the countdown is finished!

Top Tips

• Starting late? Use only the numbers for the days remaining. For a one-week countdown starting October 24, use strips 7 through 1.
• Keep loops attached: Press glued ends together until they hold and let the glue dry before hanging. If a seam pops open, secure the overlap with a small piece of clear tape.
• Hang gently: Display the chain on a wall or noticeboard where you can help children reach the removable end. Support it without pulling the paper tight, and keep it clear of doorways and walkways.
• Make a Halloween display: Place your chain near a printable haunted house that the kids can color and build.

Educational Uses

• Number recognition: Read the numbers already printed on the strips. Ask which number comes next as you count backward.
