If you are a fan of Nutella, then these cookies will be right up your alley.
Better yet, give them to a loved one who is a big fan!
These cookies look amazing, and like they take a ton of work, but they are surprisingly easy to cut and bake.
We’ll show you step by step how to make these sweetheart cookies, and how to fill them with Nutella. Yum!
Ingredients
To make these cookies, we’ll give you a favorite sugar cookie recipe of ours. Of course, you could use your favorite recipe. But ours works really well for these cookies!
You’ll also need a couple of cookie cutters, confectioners flower to decorate with and, of course, Nutella!
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 stick unsalted butter, softened
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups all purpose flour + extra for rolling
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- ¼ cup Nutella/hazelnut spread
- 2 tbsp confectioners’ sugar, sifted
You’ll Also Need…
- 1 heart-shaped cookie cutter, about 2 ½ inches at its widest portion
- 1 miniature heart-shaped cookie cutter, about 1 inch in size
Instructions
To start, don’t worry about preheating the oven yet, the dough will have to chill for an hour before we even think about baking.
Making the Sugar Cookie Dough
In a large mixing bowl, cream the granulated sugar and eggs together.
Then add the butter and vanilla extract to your sugar and egg mixture. Mix together well.
In a separate large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder and salt.
Then add your dry ingredients to the egg and butter mixture until a nice sugar cookie dough is formed.
Wrap up the cookie dough using plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for an hour or so.
While your cookie dough is chilling, you can prepare 2 baking sheets by lining them with parchment paper.
After your hour is up, pull your dough out of the fridge and start to preheat your oven to 375F.
Now it’s time to start cutting your sugar cookie dough into their heart shapes.
Dust a bit of flour onto a clean working surface. A marble cutting board or clean, flat counter surface works great for this!
Roll out the chilled cookie dough until it is about ¼ of an inch thick.
Cut out 14-20 heart shaped cookies with the large cookie cutter. You’ll end up with 1/2 as many cookies as you cut out.
Then place each heart shaped cookie on the lined baking sheets.
Using the small heart shaped cookie cutter, cut a small heart into the center of half of your precut cookies.
Bake the cookies for 7-10 minutes or until the edges are just golden brown. Resist the urge to overbake!
Allow all of your cookies to cool.
Once the cookies are cooled, place the cookies with the tiny heart-shaped cutout onto a separate pan and use a sifter to dust the cookies with with confectioners’ sugar.
How to Fill Your Cookies with Nutella
Now to fill the cookies with Nutella and assemble your sweetheart cookies!
Using a small spatula or butter knife, start spreading the Nutella onto all of the large heart cookies that don’t have holes in them.
Fill the cookies just enough to get a good amount of Nutella, but without using so much that it’ll ooze over the edges when you place the second cookie on top.
Next, assemble the sweetheart cookies by placing the sugar-dusted cookies with the heart shaped hole, over the Nutella covered cookies.
Repeat the process for each sweetheart cookie.
