Tasty Blood Cupcakes for Halloween
We LOVE us some Halloween in this house. There are so many fun treats and crafts to make.
Today we are making blood cupcakes for halloween!
The fun thing about these cupcakes, is that we use our own homemade, edible blood for cakes.
This blood can be used to fill and decorate these cupcakes with.
We’ll show you how to make the fake blood at home yourself so you can make your own blood filled cupcakes for Halloween!
The fake blood can be customized easily just by adding more food coloring to get a deeper red.

Ingredients for Blood Cupcakes for Halloween
For these bloody cupcakes,
you’ll need to start with a basic cupcake recipe. This is one of our favorite recipes for basic cupcakes.
You’ll need:
- 2 cups of white flour
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon of baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1 teaspoon of vinegar
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
- 1/3 cup of oil or butter
- 1 cup of water
- 1 can of your favorite frosting (Or use your own favorite homemade recipe.)
Fake Blood Ingredients
For the fake blood to decorate and fill your cupcakes you’ll need:
- 1/2 cup of corn syrup
- Red food dye (Gel works best)
How to Make Your Blood Cupcakes
To make your cupcakes, start by preheating the oven to 350º and gathering up all of your ingredients.
Mix all of the dry ingredients together in a medium-sized mixing bowl and stir well.
In a separate larger mixing bowl, mix your wet ingredients except for the water.
Add your dry ingredients to your wet ingredients in small increments until your mixture is smooth and well incorporated.
Keep adding your dry ingredients until it’s completely mixed in.
Now add in your cup of water and continue to mix.
Once your cupcake mix is mostly smooth pour into cupcake liners. We used basic colored cupcake liners to allow the fake blood to really pop out.
But black or halloween themed cupcake liners would be fun too!
Fill your cupcake liners to the top with this recipe as it doesn’t tend to rise as much as other cupcake recipes.
Bake your cupcakes in the oven for 30 minutes. They will be done once a tooth pick comes out clean.
Remove your cupcakes from the oven and cool completely on a wire rack before icing.
While your cupcakes are cooling, make your fake blood to decorate them with.
How to Make Edible Blood to Fill the cakes
Making the fake blood to fill and decorate your cupcakes with is pretty easy.
Simply put your corn syrup in a bowl and mix in red gel food coloring until its the color you want.
The more red dye you add, the deeper color your blood will have. 10-20 drops should do the trick.
Creating Your Bloody Cupcakes
Once your cupcakes are cool, you can use a decorating tip to make a hole in the center of each of your cupcakes. This will be the blood reservoir.
Make sure to save the circular cake piece you remove, to re-seal your cupcake up once you’ve added the blood filling.
Now use about one teaspoon of the fake blood and pour into each cupcake hole.
Then replace the top piece of your cupcake back in its spot.
Using a large decorating star tip and a piping bag, frost your cupcakes in a circular fashion, starting from the outside and working your way toward the center.
Once all of your cupcakes are filled and iced, it’s time to drizzle your edible blood to decorate your cupcakes.
Simply use a spoon and grab a good amount and loosely drizzle over each cupcake.
If you want make blood splatter cupcakes instead of blood drizzled cupcakes, you could use a fork and hit a butter knife against it to send your fake blood flying over your icing.
Just make sure to lay down a towel first for easier cleanup.
These would make great Halloween cupcakes to serve at a party or for a special scary movie night.
