What’s Included
The printable comes in two versions of the same design. The precolored turtle is brown and cream, with darker markings on the head and legs. On the coloring version, the large craft pieces are uncolored, while the little completed example is still in color.
The sheet includes a patterned shell, a head with a smile, separate eyes, legs, and a small tail. Dashed guides mark the outside cutting edges. Each version contains the pieces for one turtle, so choose one version per child.
Materials
- Turtle printable template: Choose the precolored or coloring version.
- White paper or lightweight cardstock: Paper works well on a background; cardstock gives a loose cutout more support.
- Scissors: Use a pair suited to your child’s cutting skills, with adult help for small details.
- Glue stick: Apply small amounts at the joins.
- Crayons or colored pencils: For the coloring version.
- Optional background paper: Use it to hold the pieces in place and create a scene.
How to Make the Turtle Cut and Paste Craft
Start with printing and coloring. Print the version you want. If you chose the coloring sheet, decorate the pieces while they are still on the page. Then cut around the dashed outside guides and keep the small pieces together in a dish or tray.
- Set the shell in the middle of your workspace. Place the head at the front, matching the position shown in the small example.
- Try the legs around the lower edge of the shell before gluing. Keep the feet facing toward the bottom of your picture.
- Tuck the attachment ends of the legs and the small tail behind the shell. Glue them in place, leaving the decorated areas visible.
- Attach the head so it overlaps the front edge of the shell, then add the eyes. Lay the turtle flat to dry before moving it.
Top Tips
Keep the shell as one piece; its inner lines are decorations, not cutting guides. Separate the little tail from the other offcuts early so it does not get swept away with the scraps.
Let the shell overlap the ends of the legs so the joins stay hidden. Before gluing the head, check that the face and both eyes will remain visible beside the shell.
Ways to Use the Finished Craft
Turn shell coloring into a pattern activity. Children can alternate two colors, choose a different color for every section, or describe the repeating pattern they made. Mount the turtle on a painted or drawn pond-bank background.

Printing Tips
Print in portrait orientation and check the preview before printing. Use “Fit” if any parts are being clipped, and keep the page proportions unchanged. Print a single test sheet before making copies for a group.
Choose color printing for the precolored version. Grayscale works for the coloring version; the small colored example will appear in shades of gray. Use the same print settings for all pieces so they stay in proportion.
