Materials Needed

Split Pins (Brads): Small paper fasteners with a round head and two legs that spread apart at the back. Split pins and brads are two names for the same supply.

Paper or lightweight cardstock: Use a weight your printer can handle. Cardstock helps the joints hold up to play.

A small hole punch: An adult can use a suitable hole-making tool for joint marks that a punch cannot reach. Keep sharp tools and loose brads away from young children.

How to Make a Split Pin Paper Robot

1. Download and print: Open the PDF and select the robot you want to make. Print on paper or lightweight cardstock, checking the preview to make sure none of the pieces are clipped.

2. Color before cutting: Decorate the robot while the sheet is still whole. This makes it easier to hold steady. Leave the little cross marks visible so you can find the joints.

3. Cut out the pieces: Follow the outer outline of each separate robot part. Keep the small tabs with cross marks attached—they are the connection points. An adult can help with narrow curves and small pieces.

4. Make the joint holes: Lay out the pieces using the small finished-robot picture as a guide. Have an adult make a small hole at each marked connection point, just large enough for the brad.

5. Add the split pins: Overlap the matching joint points and pass a brad through both layers. Open its two legs at the back to hold the pieces together. Leave a little room between the layers so the part can turn, then repeat for the remaining joints.

6. Pose and play: Gently move each joint to check that it turns. Try making your robot wave, reach, or strike a silly pose. If a joint catches, check that the paper isn’t trapped beneath the fastener.

Top Tips

• Use Cardstock: Printing on heavier paper makes the robots more durable for play.
• Customize: Add stickers or try our printable googly eyes for a different expression. Keep decorations clear of the moving joints.
• Pre-cut for Younger Kids: If working with younger children, pre-cut the pieces to make it easier for them to assemble.

Stiff joints: Gently ease the brad away from the paper a little; pressing it too tightly can stop the pieces from turning. Don’t force a limb if the paper starts to bend.

Loose or torn holes: Reinforce the back of the paper with a small piece of tape before making a fresh hole through it. Replace a badly torn piece rather than making its hole larger.
