How to Disguise a Gingerbread Man
1. Choose a disguise. Look through the characters together and choose a color or outline page. Ask your child who their gingerbread man will pretend to be.
2. Color before cutting. If you’re using an outline version, color the gingerbread body and costume pieces while they’re still on the sheet. It’s easier than trying to hold the tiny pieces afterward.
3. Cut out the body and accessories. Cut around the outside of each piece. Younger children may need help with eyes, mustaches, and other small details. Keep the gingerbread face intact; separate eyes and facial details are glued on top, not cut out of the face.
4. Arrange the disguise. Place the pieces on the gingerbread man before adding glue. Use the small finished picture as a guide. For pieces that sit behind the body, such as the angel’s wings, check the placement before attaching the front layers.
5. Glue everything in place. Add a little glue to each piece and press it down. Let the glue dry, then display the character on its own or attach it to a construction-paper background.

Tips for a Smoother Craft Time
- Keep pieces together. Give each child a small tray or envelope so the little accessories don’t disappear.
- Use a light layer of glue. Too much can wrinkle the paper and make small pieces slide around.
- Help with tricky cutting. You can cut the smaller pieces ahead of time and leave the coloring, arranging, and gluing to younger kids.
- Let the colors be their choice. The example is a placement guide. A purple dinosaur or a rainbow space suit works too!
Gingerbread Man Project Ideas for the Classroom
Turn the craft into a short gingerbread disguise project by asking children to explain their choices. On a separate sheet of paper, have them finish: “I’m not a gingerbread man! I’m a…” Then add a sentence about how the costume will help their cookie stay hidden.
Younger children can tell their story aloud while an adult writes it down. Older children can write a few sentences about where their character goes and what happens when someone nearly discovers the disguise. These are optional activities to add alongside the craft; the PDF contains the cut-and-paste designs.
Give each character a secret identity using our gingerbread man names, then invite kids to introduce their characters to the group. A classroom display titled “You Can’t Catch Us!” would be a fun way to show them off.
For children who want to keep choosing clothes and creating outfits, our gingerbread dress-up dolls are another activity to try.
Printing Tips
Open the PDF and select the individual page you want before printing. Check the print preview to make sure the whole design fits on your paper, and keep the body and accessories at the same scale.
Regular paper works well for a craft that will be glued to a background. Cardstock makes a sturdier character if you plan to handle it for storytelling. Use the outline pages with your printer’s grayscale setting if you want the small colored example to print in gray as well.
