Ingredients Needed for Conversation Heart Cookies

  • 3/4 cup softened salted butter
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups + 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon almond extract
  • 1 Large egg
  • 16oz can vanilla frosting
  • Pink, yellow, green, and purple food coloring
  • Decorating bags or sandwich bags
  • Large Wilton heart cookie cutter

To Make the Sugar Cookies

Start by making your sugar cookies. If you want to skip this step, you purchase premade sugar cookie dough and roll it out.

I have found that this doesn’t always produce the best results as far as cookie shape though.

Preheat your oven to 325°. Like a baking sheet with some parchment paper and set aside.

In a large bowl beat your room temperature butter and sugar together until you form a light and fluffly mixuture.

Next, add in your eggs and almond extract and mix together.

Finally, add in the flour until you have a nice thick cookie dough.

Now your dough is ready to roll out and cut into shapes!

Turning the Sugar Cookies into Conversation Hearts

Roll out the sugar cookie dough onto a floured surface and cut out as many hearts with the heart cookie cutter as you can.

If you need to, roll up the scrap pieces of dough and re-roll out to get a few more cookies from your dough.

Line your heart-shaped cookies onto your lined baking sheet.

Bake for 8 minutes and let cool, don’t overbake! The cookies will come out soft but then stiffen as they cool.

Separate your frosting into 5 separate cups and dye each one a different color with food coloring and leave one white.

Then scoop each of the frosting colors into separate decorating bags. Cut the tip off of each bag.

Scoop your frosting into decorating bags and cut a small tip off the end of each bag.

Decorate each cookie with a different color.

To make it easy, I suggest outlining each cookie first.
